Is Medicine Moving Forwards or Backwards?

Did you know that the FDA has approved the marketing of leeches for medicinal purposes? Ok, first of all, eww. How gross is that? Would you really want your surgeon coming in, leeches in one hand, scalpel in the other? Honestly, I think I'd rather lose my leg than have a nice leech suck the blood. Sure, they'd be cleanly raised but eww. I know the article says they're already used but still. It just doesn't sound like a medical procedure I'd be fond of if someone suggested it.

Secondly, why is medicine digressing? Can't we find something more efficient and less blood sucking than a leech in all of our "knowledge" and "power?" It seems like medicine strives to be more high tech but things like this and herbal supplements are all the rage these days. Don't get me wrong, I don't think herbal supplements are bad (I'd prefer people use real herbs instead of 90% filler but that's another rant) but it seems funny how modern medicine, who has shunned this kind of thing for centuries, is jumping on the 19th century bandwagon.

Did this rant have a point? Not really. My head, however, does...ok, not really again but it sounds good.
